International level: CSR/global corporate citizenship and development
· In an address to The World Economic Forum on 31 January 1999, United Nation Secretary-General Kofi Annan challenged business leaders to join an international initiative – the UN Global Compact – that would bring companies together with UN agencies, labour and civil society to support nine (now ten) principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment, and anti-corruption.
o At its core are six UN agencies: UNEP, ILO, OHCHR, UNDP, UNIDO, UNODC
o > e.g.

§ The Business Responsibility for Sustainable Development project promotes research and policy dialogue on corporate social and environmental responsibility. It examines whether or not transnational corporations (TNCs) and other companies are taking meaningful steps to improve their social and environmental record, particularly in developing countries. Considerable attention is focused on the effectiveness of "voluntary initiatives" such as codes of conduct, social and environmental reporting, certification, labelling, corporate social investment and improvements in environmental management systems.

o A Sustainable Development Roadmap for the WTO (November 2009; .pdf has 64 pp.; By Aaron Cosbey)
§ The impasse in the Doha negotiations offers both grounds for concern about the current regime’s model, and the breathing space in which to thoughtfully consider how that model might better serve today’s needs.
§ This short book argues that the WTO has committed to sustainable development as one of its basic objectives, and asks what the organization would look like if that objective were rigorously pursued.
§ The answers (that range across areas as diverse as dispute settlement, accession, trade and environment, trade and development, and the negotiation process) identify what needs to be done and what role the WTO should play.
§ The result is a timely roadmap for helping the WTO achieve its full economic, environmental and social potential.
